China Unveils Ambitious Plan to Establish 10,000 5G-Powered Factories by 2027
China has set its sights on a groundbreaking initiative to construct 10,000 factories powered by 5G technology and establish at least 20 pilot cities for the integrated application of 5G + industrial internet within the next six years. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) unveiled this ambitious plan on Monday, with a primary goal of accelerating the convergence of information and communication technology through data-driven strategies, ultimately creating a robust industrial network system centred around 5G technology.
By the year 2027, the plan envisions the widespread integration of 5G + Industrial Internet across key sectors of the real economy, encompassing network infrastructure, technological products, integrated applications, industrial ecosystems, and public services. Tang Libo, a representative from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, highlighted the importance of incorporating advanced technologies like 5G-A, AI, new industrial control systems, and industrial computing power to cater to future industrial requirements and propel the development of a cutting-edge industrial network system.
The strategic move aims to enhance the synergy between the industrial internet and crucial industrial chains, fostering a high-quality development ecosystem for the industrial internet. Presently, China boasts over 17,000 5G+ industrial internet projects spanning all 41 major industrial sectors. The country has successfully established more than 4,000 5G-powered factories, with 700 of them recognised as high-level 5G factories by the MIIT. These advancements have led to significant applications in various industries such as manufacturing, mining, power, and ports.
