Chinese Tech Giants Poised for Significant AI Advancements in Social, Educational, and Office Sectors
Chinese tech giants are leveraging AI in social, educational, and office domains to enhance user experiences. Alibaba's Ant Group leads with its popular AI financial assistant, Zhixiaobao, catering to millions of users. Baidu integrates Ernie LLM into services like search and Wenku, offering AI-generated responses and slide deck creation.
The report underscores the potential for the country's tech behemoths to make significant strides by incorporating generative AI (GenAI) into various aspects of their operations.
Tech companies in China are swiftly embracing large language models (LLMs), the technology underpinning GenAI products like ChatGPT. This rapid adoption has led to the widespread integration of AI-driven features across a range of services, as outlined in a report by mobile internet market consultancy QuestMobile released on Tuesday.
Key players such as Baidu, Tencent Holdings, ByteDance, and Alibaba Group Holding are at the forefront of leveraging AI within their existing platforms, aiming to enhance user experiences and engagement. Notably, Alibaba's fintech arm, Ant Group, has seen remarkable success with its AI-powered "intelligent financial assistant," Zhixiaobao, boasting nearly 60 million users as of June.
Baidu has strategically embedded its Ernie LLM into various services, including its search engine and online document sharing platform Wenku. Similar to Google's Gemini, Baidu's search engine now provides AI-generated responses to user queries, while Wenku can automatically generate slide decks based on text inputs, ranking as the top two most popular AI features in China.
The versatility of LLMs has been a driving force behind the surge in AI adoption, enabling these models to deliver sophisticated outcomes from plain language queries. When combined with other GenAI technologies, LLMs can generate diverse responses encompassing text, images, audio, and video content, often yielding surprising results.
However, the report also highlights challenges associated with GenAI, including the generation of false or politically sensitive information. In China, the dissemination of LLMs requires government approval to mitigate such risks. To date, 188 models have received approval for public use, powering applications across various sectors like emotional companionship, artistic creation, online shopping, and financial services, reaching an estimated 600 million users in China.
Moreover, GenAI's influence extends beyond software to hardware, with smartphone and PC manufacturers increasingly integrating AI capabilities to drive sales. By 2028, AI-capable smartphones are projected to capture 54% of the global market, while over 80% of PCs priced above US$800 are expected to be AI-enabled, according to market consultancy Canalys.
