MediaTek and NVIDIA Join Forces to Develop 3nm AI PC Chip Set for Tape-Out This Month
MediaTek and NVIDIA are collaborating on a 3nm AI PC chip set to begin tape-out this month. The chip will integrate an NVIDIA GPU and is expected to be adopted by major PC manufacturers. Industry analysts anticipate that the partnership will lead to the development of high-efficiency AI PC processors.
The chip is scheduled to begin tape-out this month and is projected to enter mass production in the latter half of 2025, as revealed by Chinese tech influencer @MobileChipExpert. This innovative chip will feature an NVIDIA GPU and is anticipated to be embraced by major PC manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, HP, and ASUS. By combining MediaTek's advanced 3nm chip design with NVIDIA's top-tier GPU technology, the AI PC chip is poised to revolutionise AI-driven computing, impacting both consumer and global markets significantly.
The upcoming AI PC chip represents the first-ever partnership between NVIDIA and MediaTek in the PC processor sector, marking a significant milestone in their collaboration history. While specific details about the chip are yet to be officially confirmed, tech media outlet Wccftech speculates that it will utilise TSMC's 3nm process based on ARM architecture. NVIDIA is expected to integrate its next-gen iGPU to enhance the standards of its forthcoming SoC, as per reports.
According to Taiwanese media outlet Economic Daily News, MediaTek's AI PC chip is slated to be produced using TSMC's 3nm process, with tape-out completion anticipated in the third quarter. Mass production is on track for 2025, with an estimated cost of up to US$300 per chip. Industry analysts are optimistic about the collaboration between MediaTek and NVIDIA, recognising the synergy between NVIDIA's potent gaming graphics processors and AI GPUs and MediaTek's design expertise for ARM architecture processors. This partnership is expected to streamline processor development and yield a new generation of high-efficiency, lightweight AI PC processors.
Last year, MediaTek and NVIDIA unveiled their joint venture to develop the Dimensity Auto Cockpit platform, an automotive SoC that incorporates NVIDIA's graphics technology and NVIDIA Drive OS. This processor integrates NVIDIA's graphics and AI computing capabilities while leveraging software tools like the autonomous driving software DRIVE OS, DRIVE IX, CUDA, and TensorRT.
In the second quarter of 2024, shipments of AI PCs totalled 8.8 million units, representing 14% of overall PC shipments, according to market research firm Canalys. Canalys forecasts that the global market is poised to ship approximately 44 million AI-capable PCs in 2024 and 103 million units in 2025.
