Nadella's visit to Jakarta marks the beginning of his trip to Southeast Asian countries, where he plans to promote Microsoft's generative AI technology. He will also be visiting Malaysia and Thailand later this week.
During his visit, Nadella met with outgoing President Joko Widodo and his cabinet ministers to discuss joint AI research and talent development. Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi revealed that Widodo suggested Microsoft consider establishing its data centres in Bali or the new capital city, Nusantara, which is currently being constructed in the Borneo jungle.
In addition to infrastructure development, Microsoft aims to train 2.5 million people in Southeast Asia in AI usage by 2025, with 840,000 of them being in Indonesia. This initiative is part of the company's global efforts to support the development of AI technology.
Indonesia, with its large and tech-savvy population, is a prime target market for tech-related investments. Microsoft's decision to invest in the country's cloud and AI expansion aligns with its goal of reaching a wider audience and driving innovation in the region.
This announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft's strong financial performance in the third quarter, surpassing Wall Street estimates. The company attributed its success to the increasing adoption of AI across its cloud services.
