OpenAI Secures US$4 Billion Credit Line Following Major Funding Round
OpenAI secures a US$4 billion credit line post $6.6 billion funding round. The credit facility enhances liquidity to $10 billion for the company. Recent funding valued OpenAI at nearly $157 billion, with notable investors like Microsoft and Nvidia.
This development comes hot on the heels of a significant US$6.6 billion funding round that solidified its position as one of the most valuable private companies globally.
The new credit facility will bolster OpenAI's liquidity to US$10 billion, enabling the company to invest in expensive computing resources, including Nvidia chips, as it competes with tech giants like Google, owned by Alphabet.
Sarah Friar, OpenAI's finance chief, expressed, "This credit facility further strengthens our balance sheet and provides flexibility to seize future growth opportunities."
The credit line involves prominent financial institutions such as JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Santander, Wells Fargo, SMBC, UBS, and HSBC.
In a recent funding round, OpenAI received backing from venture capital investors, including Thrive Capital and Khosla Ventures, valuing the company at nearly US$157 billion. Notably, Microsoft and Nvidia, among others, participated in the funding through convertible notes.
The conversion of these notes into equity is contingent upon OpenAI's successful transition into a for-profit entity and the elimination of the cap on investor returns.
Despite recent executive changes, such as the departure of Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, investor enthusiasm remains high. CEO Sam Altman's projections indicate substantial growth, with OpenAI expected to generate US$3.6 billion in revenue this year, despite losses exceeding US$5 billion. Sources suggest a significant revenue increase to US$11.6 billion next year.
OpenAI has offered Thrive Capital a unique opportunity to invest an additional $1 billion next year at the same valuation if the company achieves a specific revenue target, as reported by Reuters.
