The Chinese social media giant plans to soon begin recruiting sellers for its e-commerce arm, TikTok Shop, in Japan, the report said, citing a source involved in the operations.

TikTok Shop allows users to host livestreams to sell products ranging from sneakers to eyeshadow, earning commissions on sales. The platform is known for offering discounted items.

The move comes as TikTok seeks to expand its business outside the United States, where it is awaiting a deal to secure its continued presence. In March, TikTok Shop launched in France, Germany, and Italy, further extending its reach into Europe.

The future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain. A 2024 law, passed with strong bipartisan support, requires ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, to divest the app by Jan. 19.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently indicated that a deal regarding TikTok’s fate may be delayed, while also suggesting an end to the tariff disputes between the United States and China.

Earlier, Trump had extended the deadline for TikTok to spin off its U.S. assets for a second time in April, stating that a potential agreement was still "on the table."

TikTok is used by nearly half of all Americans, making its future in the country a significant issue for both users and the broader tech industry.
